Lymphedema is a build-up of lymph fluid in the fatty tissues just under your skin. This build-up might also be called an obstruction and cause swelling and discomfort. It often happens in the arms or legs, but can also happen in the face, neck, trunk, abdomen (belly), and genitals. It’s important to know that lymphedema can sometimes become severe and cause serious problems, and often is a long-term or chronic condition. This is why early and careful management is needed to help reduce symptoms and keep it from getting worse.

What is Lymphedema?
What Should I Expect With My Treatment?
Upon arrival at Color Country Physical Therapy, you will be evaluated by one of our physical therapists and introduced to our lymphedema specialist. On day one of treatment, our lymphedema specialist will perform a series of hands-on techniques to the skin of the affected area to move lymphatic fluid out of the affected limb and into areas with proper drainage. This treatment will most likely be followed up by wrapping of the affected limb using sleeves, foam, and wrapping bandages. This wrapping is to prevent refill of lymphatic fluid into the affected limb after it has been drained by our lymphatic specialist. For best results, this treatment will take place five times a week for two or three weeks with wraps worn at all times between visits. Upon completion of treatment, you will be prescribed compression stockings to maintain reduction of lymphatic fluids as you enjoy your new freedoms in your daily life.
